In a significant development ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Address Young People's Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.
"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Details of the Fresh Electoral Agreement
According to the formal pact, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the country's older political leadership. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.
Broader Political Discussions Underway
In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister recently held meetings with a number of major political figures. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the protests.
After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared duty. The message reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
