Federal authorities have officially joined a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to block the California's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This legal action, submitted to a US district court, challenges the map championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme constitutes a brazen power grab that violates voting rights and mocks the electoral system," declared the nation's top law enforcement official.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the new maps will survive court challenges.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and they are likely to face defeat in the judicial system," commented a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit claims that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in contravention of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," argued a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the most significant counterpunch by Democrats in the continuing redistricting war that started with Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed voter approval, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to flip just a small number of Republican-held House seats to take control of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the majority will shape the remaining period of the current administration, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its political program or encounter opposition, investigations and possible additional obstacles.
